Teacher Update #1
Nope, not “Author Update” this time! Today begins my first day on the job as an educator with Sylvan Learning, on a contract for 10 weeks. I will be teaching a math course which is super weird because I am not great at math. But, I will be teaching kids my daughter’s age, so I think I should be okay. Fingers crossed! Unfortunately, starting this position falls on the back of getting a terrible intestinal infection that has put me completely out of commission since last Saturday night. I’ve been to the Urgent Care and Emergency Room; the first for treatment, second, largely, for testing and treating dehydration. It has been a tough week and I’m still not quite done with the infection. But, outcomes are brighter than they were yesterday.
The goal of this temporary assignment is to become a more permanent hire in November. The center director was most interested in me since she needs skilled writing instructors on staff, which I am. I start at the probationary level for the first 90-days, doing grades 4–6 for 10 weeks, then we will evaluate my performance and decide if I’m ready to move on to the larger role. Now, don’t get me wrong, it is not a well-paying job, but the hours are really great for my schedule, and it’s very close by. So, on to the next phase of my career — one that I am far more excited about than I was with my last position. Wish me luck these next few weeks so that I can satisfactorily get the position I want, and keep moving forth.
