My friend and I have been talking a lot about starting an actual writing group since school ended. I was introduced to her by a former instructor who I highly value as a wonderful creative mind. The instructor told me in a meeting that there was someone around my age also graduating who wanted to keep up writing after graduating, despite moving onto a non-writing career (it will definitely pay better, that’s for sure). Turned out that the two of us had been sitting next to each other in a class during my final quarter of school without even knowing it! So, we talked a bit. Then, we talked more. And, suddenly, I realize that I might actually have a friend for the first time in a very long time. Having social anxiety, and being over 30, I realize how intensely remarkable it is to make a friend, and I am so grateful to have her.
Talking with my newest friend has come surprisingly easy — a remarkable feat, to say the least! But, I will say that our chatting sometimes has detracted from our original intent to form a writing group. So, better late than never — we have finally formed the group! As alumni of UC Irvine, and possibly a few of our non-Anteater friends, we thought “Friends of Peter” had a fun ring to it. We have started a Discord server, and are welcoming new members who are looking for a casual writing group with cool people. If you are interested in joining, just shoot me a reply below and I will get in contact with you! I am so excited to finally get this off the ground, and I can’t wait to dive into workshopping and idea sharing with the group.
